Taxashila at Kolkatta is a cultural center located outside the fabled "city of joy," Kolkatta, that seeks to embody the socio-cultural aspirations, historical background and ambience of the place. The aim is to create an experience that would reflect local values and foster community. Taxashila forms an important node in the continuity of public spaces across the city. A floating deck is visualized as the intervention which addresses a number of site, aesthetic, structural and programmatic issues. The deck is a bold visual element and will be highlighted as such to become the back bone of the project. Retail units above the deck are designed to be light weight structures to take advantage of the deck as a structural system. They define the organic street profile ending in a court around which the club is placed.
