An oculus is a circular opening in the center of a dome or a wall, designed to admit natural light into a space. The most iconic example is the oculus of the Pantheon in Rome. It acts as both a functional architectural element—providing illumination and ventilation—and a symbolic gesture, often associated with the heavens or divine presence. In modern architecture, oculi are used in skylights and dome constructions to create dramatic lighting effects.
