A pier is a solid vertical structural element, typically rectangular or square in shape, used to support arches, bridges, or vertical loads in buildings. Unlike columns, piers often support heavier structures and are broader in profile. They may be free-standing or part of a wall, commonly found in both modern and historical architecture, especially in foundations and bridge abutments.
