Morphogenesis is a design practice engaging in a critical dialogue towards bridging the boundaries of art, architecture, urbanism and environmental design in India. Founded in 1996, Morphogenesis is an association of architects, designers, urbanists and environmentalists. The Morphogenesis approach to creativity is inspired by the evolutionary processes in nature to create built form which is optimized for the built environment and the community. Design is viewed as a result of different stimuli, ranging from climatic conditions, urban fabric, local traditions, and human activity. At Morphogenesis, sustainability is a core creative value and is practiced in the evolution of the design. The practice considers the widening scope of sustainability to be all inclusive; to include social, cultural, financial, technological and environmental sustainability. It is this inclusive nature of design that, Morphogenesis believes, will define the new emergent Indian architecture.

Morphogenesis, is recognized internationally as the leading Indian contemporary design firm and the work of the practice has been exhibited at several venues globally including the Gallerie ROM in Norway and the Royal Institute of British Architects in London in an exhibition titled ‘Critical Projects’. Manit has also been invited as a speaker to various events like, International Green Building Conference (IGBC), (Singapore), Urban Islands (Australia), Green Building Conference (Hongkong), the first International Summit on Corporate Social Responsibility (New Delhi) and the World Architecture Congress (Dubai and Singapore) etc.

The practice has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including Good Design™ Award-The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum 2009, The Architectural Review Cityscape Awards for the Best Environmental Design internationally and the Residential (Built) category, Project of the Year in The AIQ Awards (Israel), The A+D Spectrum Award for ‘The Young Enthused Architect’, and the JIIA (Indian Institute of Architects) Award for excellence in architecture among others. The work has also been extensively published in both national as well as international publications including Architectural Design, Domus (Italy), The Plan (Italy), Wallpaper (UK), Architecture Record, Spaces (UK), The Atlas of Global Architecture (Spain), Art 4D (Thailand), Contemporary Indian Architecture, The Guardian (UK) and 10+1 (Japan) etc.

Sonali Rastogi

Sonali is a co-founder of morphogenesis, which is recognized internationally as the leading Indian contemporary design firm. Graduated from the Architectural Association, London with a graduate diploma in Housing and a second graduate diploma in Graduate Design(Now design Research lab), Sonali has been a director in the practice since 1996. Her experience and expertise in Architectural and Interior design has been recognized by way of numerous awards and accolades including the YFLO Woman Achiever of the Year Award in 2006, recognition as one of the 10 leading women architects in India by A+D 2007 and India Today magazine features her as pre-eminent Indian woman architect.
Sanjay Bhardwaj

Graduated from the School of Planning and Architecture and has been a Director in Morphogenesis since 2002. He has 19 years of extensive experience in master planning, design and execution of projects and has been on several design juries. His forte is delivering cutting edge Urban Planning, Mixed Use developments and Housing which are sustainable environmentally as well as financially within the given local constraints of controls, time and cost. He has also taught Conservation Architecture at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi.

Philosophy
Morphogenesis: The process of development of form, structure and organization in nature.

We, at Morphogenesis, view our practice as an architectural laboratory, looking to expand the boundaries of architecture and environmental design. As designers in an increasingly connected world, we take cues not only from our immediate context but from the expanded field of networked geographies and interdisciplinary forces. We approach design by looking at the project context anew with its various local and non-local, physical and non-physical aspects.

We believe that every project is an opportunity to investigate the program from a fresh perspective. All Morphogenesis projects follow extensive research and theoretical examination. A combination of research and design charettes allows our work to be rigorous yet democratic and non-deterministic as it evolves. As designers we like to challenge the orthodoxies of architectural design and its established hierarchies.

Each project is an opportunity to address issues particular to that site, client, program, climate, and region. We are intrigued with the intimate narratives of the private house at one end and the modulation of public-private spaces in office complexes and institutions on the other. A range of specific spatial tropes inform our practice, layering for instance. Layers and imbricated patterns inform not only the way we look at spatial organization but also the way we approach bioclimatic design, using layers or skins to sheath the building. While we believe in progress we continue to learn from time-honoured models of architectural expression which were rooted in their cultural and environmental contexts.

We consider existing and emergent technologies and systems design and its integration with the emergent construction industry in India as our core competency. Our research oriented approach to building engineering, materials and construction technology allows to continuously experiment with new architecture in search of tectonic innovation.

We champion sustainable design which forms the core of our practice. We see design itself as a collateral consideration of sustainabilities such as social, cultural, financial, and environmental sustainability. It is this inclusive nature of design that, we believe, will define the new emergent architecture.
