VR Metropolitan

Delhi has never been a singular city. Shaped by successive cultures, dynasties, landscapes, and communities, it has evolved through layers of history that continue to define its identity. It is this layered urban character that forms the foundation of VR Metropolitan.
Conceived as more than a retail destination, the project reimagines the contemporary shopping mall as a compact urban experience, recreating the essence of Delhi within a single destination. Drawing from the city’s history, public spaces, crafts, bazaars, and ecological context, it transforms retail into a cultural and social journey.
Located at the confluence of the Ridge and the Yamuna floodplains, the project responds to its unique position within Delhi’s urban fabric. Rather than replicating historical architecture, the design interprets the principles that have shaped the city over time: connectivity, gathering, movement, commerce, and cultural exchange.
The planning draws inspiration from the spatial structure of Lutyens’ Delhi. A central axis organises movement through the development, creating a sequence of vistas, nodes, and focal points that guide visitors through the experience. At its heart lies the Bejewelled Plaza, conceived as a contemporary city square around which streets, destinations, and social spaces unfold. Historic gateways such as Kashmiri Gate, Lahori Gate, and Ajmeri Gate are reinterpreted as arrival experiences, creating distinct thresholds that anchor visitors within the larger narrative of the city.
Throughout the project, everyday cultural references become instruments of placemaking. Flooring patterns draw from Delhi’s kite-flying traditions, while the Bejewelled Plaza reinterprets the Navratna motif through colour, craft, and geometry. Blue pottery, local crafts, ornamental details, and landscape-inspired interventions are woven into the design, creating an environment that is rooted in place while remaining contemporary in expression.
By distilling the spirit of Delhi into a network of streets, plazas, gateways, and gathering spaces, VR Metropolitan transforms a commercial destination into a contemporary public realm, celebrating the city’s enduring culture of exchange, adaptation, and reinvention.
